B P Koirala Lions Centre for Ophthalmic Studies (BPKLCOS) has a long history in ophthalmic field. It has established itself as a leader in eye care development in promoting not only ophthalmic services, but also conducting major research work and producing highly qualified ophthalmologists and optometrists, who are now leading major eye hospitals and institutions all over Nepal. Institute of Medicine was established in 1972AD and MD Ophthalmology Program was started in 1987AD as a small wing within TU Teaching Hospital. In 1996AD BPKLCOS was established as an Autonomous wing under the umbrella of Institute of Medicine, located adjacent to Emergency department within the premises of TU Teaching Hospital. Bachelor of Optometry program was established in the year 1998AD.
